Playspace Activities include hoops, tunnels, coloring, balls, books and are with the help of the Playspace facilitator. Children can bring special toys, books, or other childhood comfort items, but must bring their own diapers, wipes, snacks and drinks. Parents must remain on site. Playspace is now a PEANUT FREE ENVIRONMENT. | Ages 1-4 | drop-in with caregiver | Dana Dana Kaplan-Angle(Playspace Facilitator) Originally from Philadelphia, Dana earned her B.A. in Theatre from Northwestern University. At Northwestern she developed a love for teaching, creative drama, storytelling, and long-form improvisation. In her senior year, her improv team was the first place winner of the National College Improv Tournament. Dana works with The Striking Viking Story Pirates, a children's theatre company that leads writing workshops and performs short fiction written by children all over New York City to promote literacy, self-confidence, and creativity. | Price: $10 per family |

Modern II Using a foundation in integrated movement (dancing with the whole body), Modern II students begin to learn more formal dance technique. Rhythm and musicality begin to come into play as students explore music in dance through solo, duet, and group pieces. | 3:30-4:45 | Tumbling II/III
Tumbling II/III Utilizing yoga, gymnastics, and acrobatic techniques, students support their own weight with handstands, headstands and armstands; explore balances and lifts alone and with partners; and learn tumbling sequences of rolling and flipping. Building strength and flexibility, and self-confidence, students explore the boundaries of what their bodies are capable of. As the year progresses they learn walkovers and handsprings, and continue with more advanced partner acrobatics. Students explore their own physical abilities through movement skills into their own creative pieces. This combined level class is taught with an individualized approach challenging more experienced, developmentally mature students while accommodating the more novice. | Ages 6-10 | Diane Diane Tomasi(In-house Teacher) Diane began her teaching in 2001 and has taught ongoing classes, and workshops in and around the US, including New York, Alaska, and Massachusetts as well as the UK. Theater II Students deepen vocal, movement and improvisational skills through a series of structured exercises that emphasize proper vocal technique, stage movement, blocking and creative thinking within a scene. Students are challenged to expand their acting vocabulary by participating in selected scenes as well as creating scenes of their own. The class explores monologues, dialogues and ensemble work, as well as concepts such as conflict, motivation, and the arc of dramatic sequence. | Ages 9-12 | Shelley Shelley McPherson(In-house Teacher) Originally from Canada, Shelley received her Honours B.A. in Theater from Queens University, her B. Ed from The University of Toronto and her M.A. in Theater from Northwestern University. Shelley has taught theater at Making Books Sing, Enter Stage Write and at BAX. Shelley has performed at theatres including New York Theatre Workshop, Women's Project, Ensemble Studio Theatre, HERE, Queens Theatre in the Park, and Joe's Pub at the Public Theatre and at the Yonge Centre in Toronto, Canada. Modern IV While expanding on the formal technique introduced in Modern III, this class emphasizes time, shape, space, motion, musicality and dynamics. Students learn more advanced phrases and combinations and focus on finding their individual strengths as a dancer. Modern III A class for more experienced dance students, Modern III serves as a survey course of different kinds of dance. Units covered include modern dance technique, ballet, rhythmic dance, dance history, acrobatic dance, swing dance and dance composition. Techniques emphasized in Modern III include dance positions, leg and foot work, centering, balance, strength, stretch, and alignment, well as an exploration of multi-dimensional space. Students also learn improvisational technique and how to analyze and describe movement. Drama-rama Students engage in the fun, yet challenging process of learning through experience, which builds skills in listening, responding, creativity, problem-solving, risk taking, and group awareness. Each class consists of physical and vocal warm ups, improvisation, theatre games, and scene work. Christiana Alexsen (DPW III Guest Artist) Christiana Axelsen is a Brooklyn based teacher, dancer, and choreographer. For the last ten years, she has had the pleasure of teaching ballet and modern to dancers aged 3 to adult with a focus on using technique to find greater efficiency and a full range of movement possibilities. Christiana is a member of the contemporary dance company zoe|juniper and she also dances with Kawamura the 3rd/Mana Kawamura, the Feather Theory/Raja Kelly, and the Mill/Michou Szabo. In 2010, she was awarded the Chris Komar Merit Scholarship to study at the Merce Cunningham Studio where she performed alongside the Repertory Understudy Company in reconstructions of seminal Cunningham works. | Price: $210 |

Courtney Scheel (In-house Teacher) Originally from the Seattle area, Courtney moved to New York to attend Sarah Lawrence College where she received a BA in Anthropology and Dance. She is a certified yoga teacher through YogaWorks, and taught art and movement classes for children at the Rubin Museum of Art before coming to BAX. As a dancer/instructor she is inspired from her work with Philippa Kaye Company in Humorphous and her collaboration with dancer, choreographer, and arts educator Prachi Dalal. AcroBAXers The AcroBAXer class, structured in a workshop format, is our most advanced tumbling class. It's intended to build strength and teach tumbling and acrobatic dance skills to an ensemble of committed and experienced young performers ages 9-12. They use a wide array of skills: tumbling, cartwheels, handstands, headstands, extensive partnering, backbends and walkovers as well as circus skills to build expressive work together as an ensemble. Ms. Costello is currently a teaching artist for Lincoln Center Institute, BAX, and Dance New Amsterdam. She began teaching at BAX in 1999 and this marks her fourth year directing DPW I. Pene McCourty(BAXco Co-Director) Pene McCourty is an arts administrator, educator and interdisciplinary performing artist who uses movement as her base. As a performer and teacher she was a member of Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, Marlies Yearby's Movin' Spirits Dance Theater and Reggie Wilson/Fist. As an educator, Pene has created, taught and facilitated movement, dance and theater workshops at numerous locations within the New York City area and beyond for the past 13 years. Courtney Scheel (In-house Teacher) Originally from the Seattle area, Courtney moved to New York to attend Sarah Lawrence College where she received a BA in Anthropology and Dance. She is a certified yoga teacher through YogaWorks, and taught art and movement classes for children at the Rubin Museum of Art before coming to BAX. As a dancer/instructor she is inspired from her work with Philippa Kaye Company in Humorphous and her collaboration with dancer, choreographer, and arts educator Prachi Dalal.
