A SPECIAL THANKS TO ALL THOSE WHO HELPED WITH THE 2011TEEN ARTS CONFERENCE

On the weekend of Friday, March 11th and Saturday March 12th BAX was proud to host its annual Teen Arts Conference. It was a great opportunity to bring young artists from across the NYC area together under one roof and share their art with others.

We started off with a FREE professional development workshop: Your Teaching is Your Art-Creating Work that reflects the Community you work in, where teaching artists had the opportunity to explore various tools for creating collaborative, original work in their arts-based teaching. In a “lab” setting, participants shared experiences and techniques with peers and walked away with new ideas for shaping original, student-generated dance, theater and performance work in classrooms, residencies and beyond.

“We did EVERYTHING today! It was a day very well spent.  I’m really looking forward to coming back next year!
-Teen Participant 2011

This year we had 9 participant groups from:

- Life Lines Community Arts Project, Brooklyn, NY
- Shenandoah Contemporary Dance Theatre, Harrisburg, VA
- 92Y Harkness Repertory Ensemble, New York, NY
- Bronx Theatre Dance Company, Bronx, NY
- County Prep High School/407 Moves, Jersey City, NJ
- Brooklyn School for Music and Theatre, Brooklyn, NY
- MCC Theatre Youth Company, New York, NY
- BAX Dance Performance Workshop II & III, Brooklyn, NY

There were 13 workshops including: Partner Acrobatics, Clowning, Comedy Improv, Indian Dance, Performance lab and much more!

I was exposed to very different types of dances than I had ever seen.”

A great day spent learning a collaboration of different dance styles…
-Teen Participant 2011

We had 3 successful discussions on the Working Artist panel where students had an opportunity to meet professional working and teaching artists, the Behind the Scenes panel where students met various arts administrators, lighting designers, and technical directors, and the Show/Talk panel where students saw 3 short performances by professional artists and had a guided talk back afterwards.

Panelists included:

- Malcolm Jason Low: Choreographer/Dancer
- Sasha Soreff: Creative Director, Sasha Soreff Dance Theatre
- Croft Vaughn: Playwright/Choreographer/Performer
- Helen Frank: Marketing Director, Mark Morris Dance Group

I loved learning about the creative process that leads up to the pieces
- Teen Participant 2011

I learned about the symbiotic relationship between performing and the technicalities of performing
- Teen Participant 2011

The event culminated in a Gala Performance here in our theater space, showcasing the diverse works in Dance and Theater of each group.

It was an awesome diversity of NYC
