A SPECIAL THANKS TO ALL THOSE WHO HELPED WITH THE 2012 TEEN ARTS CONFERENCE
On Saturday March 17th BAX was proud to host its annual Teen Arts Conference. It was a great opportunity to bring young artists from across the NYC area together under one roof and share their art with others.
We started off with a FREE professional development workshop, Your Teaching is Your Art: Developing Original Work Created by Young People, where teaching artists had the opportunity to explore the process of guiding young voices to create original work. In a “Lab” setting, participants shared experiences and techniques with peers, and walked away with new ideas for shaping original, student-generated dance, theater and performance work in classrooms, residencies and beyond.
This was my first time but I was very pleased with what I did today!
-Teen Participant 2012
This year we had 10 participant groups from:
- Life Lines Community Arts Project, Brooklyn, NY
- Shenandoah Contemporary Dance Theatre, Harrisburg, VA
- 92Y Harkness Repertory Ensemble, New York, NY
- Bronx Theatre Dance Company, Bronx, NY
- County Prep High School/407 Moves, Jersey City, NJ
- Passion Flux Dance Company, Englewood, NJ
- Irondale Young Company, Brooklyn, NY
- MCC Theatre Youth Company, New York, NY
- BAX Dance Performance Workshop II & III, Brooklyn, NY
There were 13 workshops including: Parkour, Horton Technique, Partner Acrobatics, Clowning, Comedy Improv, Stage Combat, Capoeira, Performance lab and much more!
I didn’t get a chance to do Parkour, but I’m glad that pushed me into taking Physical Theatre, something I would have never done otherwise.

Partnering Acrobatics (was my favorite workshop of the day). It challenged my body and help me trust my partner.
-Teen Participant 2012
We had 3 successful discussions on the Working Artist panel where students had an opportunity to meet professional working and teaching artists, the Behind the Scenes panel where students met various arts administrators, lighting designers, and technical directors, and the Show/Talk panel where students saw 3 short performances by professional artists and had a guided talk back afterwards.
Panelists included:
-Jillian Peña: Choreographer/Dancer/BAX Artist in Residence
-David Miller: Director & Educator/Artistic Director, The Artful Conspirators
-Michael Zimmerman: Technical Director of Dance Theater Workshop
-Carolyn Giles: Theater Dept. Chair, Berkley Carroll School
-Jules Skloot: Dancer/Choreographer/Teaching Artist
-Catharine Dill: Theater Director, Producer/BAX Artist in Residence
I learned how professional dancers find inspiration.
- Teen Participant 2012
I learned about the struggle, the rewards, and challenges that these working artists had to go through to get to where they are today.
- Teen Participant 2012
The event culminated in a Gala Performance here in our theater space, showcasing the diverse works in Dance and Theater of each group.
The performances were amazing. It was so fun to see different workshops perform! They were all wonderful!
